About Kairos Counselling

Rachel Strange, counsellor

I am a qualified integrative counsellor and member of the NCPS.

(National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society).

Being an integrative counsellor means that I'm trained in using various counselling approaches and I can draw on these skills to be alongside you while we work together through the issues you want to bring into your sessions.

We're all unique and each of us deserves to be met as we are and where we are in life. The way I work aims to enable you to find the kind of space where you can be yourself whilst being supported with respect and compassion in a non-judgemental way.

I offer 1:1 face-to-face, online or telephone sessions and we would meet on a weekly basis (unless otherwise discussed and agreed). Short-term or longer-term work is welcome.

Counselling approaches we can work with

Person-centred: This approach puts you at the heart of the therapeutic space where I will be alongside you to provide a held safe space for you to explore whatever you want or need to bring to your sessions.

Gestalt: Where might you feel stuck in life? Why might that be? How might you become free of feeling stuck? This approach focuses on the here and now, experiencing the impact of our past issues in the present.

CBT: Do you ever wonder why our behaviours can be so automatic? What drives our behaviours? What thoughts do we automatically have without ever stopping to think about it? What's the impact of our thoughts on our feelings? This is a useful approach to look at what we do and why we might do it.

Inner Child: This approach addresses past wounds by uncovering, meeting and understanding the unmet needs we had as children and learning to meet those unmet needs as adults.

TA basics: This is a fascinating theory by Eric Berne where we can explore how we all show up in our relationships and interactions. It can help to make sense of ourselves and those around us.

Mindfulness: Mindfulness helps to ground us in the present and we can use mindfulness to build awareness of what's happening for you in any given moment.

Other more artistic and creative approaches can also be used.

My interests are in neurodiversity and trauma and I spend time developing my learning and growing my knowledge and experience for working in these areas. I have also undertaken training to work alongside people living with MS (Multiple Sclerosis).

Neurodiversity is very welcome at Kairos Counselling.

to what is happening within."

Experience & Qualifications

Before I re-trained and qualified as a counsellor, I trained as a classical musician (years ago!) and my working life had always been based on working directly with people.

From the age of 14, I was teaching people how to sail, and later on I occasionally taught instrumental music. I have previously worked with prisoners and spent a couple of interesting years as an undertaker. I worked with elderly people and gained experience of supporting those with dementia. I worked as a pharmacy dispenser before moving into primary education in a pastoral and safeguarding role with children since 2015.

All of these roles have needed a non-judgemental approach, buckets of empathy, plenty of common sense, a decent sense of humour and the ability to be self-reflective and flexible.
